Future Worlds to showcase university innovations at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018

Startups from the University of Southampton will be exhibiting their innovations from the Future Worlds incubator at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this January.

Future Worlds has been the UK’s sole university exhibitor at CES for the past two years as it continues a distinctive journey to build a Silicon Valley-style startup culture in the UK.

The team will be giving live demonstrations of three featured products at CES 2018: an immersive 3D audio soundbar, an intuitive language app to teach the Japanese writing system, and an artificial intelligence powered video analytics platform.

Soton Audio Labs have developed a groundbreaking system that creates immersive 3D audio from a single soundbar. The technology uses image processing with a built-in camera to track the location of the viewer in the room, and delivers a perfect 3D experience using destructive and constructive sound cancellation techniques.

Handi Kanji is an iOS app that gamifies the teaching of the Japanese writing system. The application uses intelligent stroke recognition and scoring algorithms to teach hundreds of Japanese kanji characters.

Aura Vision Labs is a cloud-based video analytics platform that harnesses the latest innovations in artificial intelligence to generate valuable data for uses in retail and future smart cities. The platform uses state-of-the-art ‘deep learning’ technology to extract useful information about how people look and move from live footage captured on low-cost cameras and existing security systems.

Future Worlds will be based in Stands 52315 and 52317 in Level 1, Hall G, of the Sands Expo, from Tuesday, 9 January, to Friday, 12 January. Media visits are welcome and can be arranged in advance to include product demos and interviews with incubator director Dr Reuben Wilcock and startup founders.

CES is one of the world’s largest trade shows, attracting a global audience of over 170,000 people to take in more than 2.4 million square feet of exhibit space packed with the best tech from around the globe. Future Worlds has featured in 2015 and 2016, creating hundreds of leads and international connections for dozens of Southampton startups represented on the stand.
